PALs (also known as multifocals or progressives) are spectacle lenses that correct the 3 main areas of vision, namely distance, intermediate and near/reading. Traditional type lenses are very basic designs as the progression is built into the front surface, and the person's distance prescription is ground onto the back surface. For low prescriptions with right and left eyes with similar powers and low astigmatism (cyl power), then this lens is adequate.
New advanced designs are customised to every type of prescription as the progression is created with the person's prescription onto the back surface. This results in vision which has less distortions, less swim effect and consistently wider distance, intermediate and reading zones.
This digitally surfaced (free form) design is ideal for mid- high prescriptions, different right and left powers, reading adds greater than +1.50, and cyls over 1.00D.
Short Corridor multifocal lenses are designed to allow today's multifocal wearers to choose some of the latest small fashion frames. These lenses give excellent distance and reading vision and are available in standard or digitally surfaced designs.
Short corridor multifocals are not recommended for those who use computers for extended periods. Instead use enhanced reading lenses as they offer larger reading and intermediate views, without distance vision.
