Has your child had an eye examination?

As parents we want our children to enjoy their growing years as they develop physically, emotionally and socially. To ensure that our children are able to perform at their best while learning and playing, it is important that they maintain good vision. Did you know that 1 in 10 Australian children suffer from a long term eye disorder? So as parents it is important to be able to recognise signs of a vision problem.

  • One eye turns in or out while the other points straight ahead
  • Frequent blinking
  • Red or watery eyes
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Frequently rubbing the eyes
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Tilting head noticeably
  • Covering or closing one eye
  • Difficulty learning to read
  • Holding a book very close to read
  • Leaving out or confusing words when reading
  • Squinting or sitting very close when watching television
  • Difficulty recognising familiar people in the distance
  • Complaints of headaches
  • Complaints of blurred or double vision
The Optometrists Association Australia recommends that children have a full eye examination with an optometrist before starting school and regularly as they progress through primary and secondary school.
